The Teachers Council is Required to

Maintain an up-to-date register of teachers

Support the development and publicity of the professional standards for teachers

Take into consideration the best interests of children in its decision making

Who Should be Registered?

All teachers engaged or to be engaged as teachers in an educational institution (public or private) under the Act, shall be registered and issued with a certificate of registration or provisional registration.

Teachers intending to teach part time in educational institutions.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

CPD must be part of your teaching role and responsibilities

The activities must enhance your teaching practices

The activities should aim to improve your professional knowledge, practice and competencies as set out in the ‘Teacher Competency Framework’

CPD can be formal or informal professional activities that contribute to your professional learning

APPROPRIATE CPD LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:

Participation in whole school professional development sessions

Presenting or running professional development sessions

Modifying/reviewing school policies, guidelines and other related matters.

Conducting or being part of action research

Modifying curriculum materials

Attendance at conferences or online learning opportunities

Types of Registration

1. Full Registration

Applicants must meet the registration requirements set out in Regulation 14.

A person is eligible for registration and issue of a certificate of registration, if s/he:

Has obtained a qualification after successfully completing a teacher education course or programme accredited or validated by the Seychelles Qualification Authority (SQA)

Has completed an induction for teachers in any educational institution recognised by SQA

Has obtained the necessary qualification from a foreign education or training course/programme recognised by SQA

Is qualified to teach under the laws of a foreign country and the Council, in consultation with SQA, is satisfied that the qualifications obtained by the person is not inferior to that adopted by the Council for registration. The Council may require such person to undergo oral or written test or other assessment

Teacher applicant with satisfactory recommendation report upon completion of the Prior Learning Programme with SQA

2. Provisional Registration (Regulation 15)

a) People granted provisional registration include:

Newly qualified teachers

Applicants with other than teaching qualifications

Teachers applying for registration after a career break in teaching

3. Extended provisional registration (Regulation 13 (4))

The initial period of provisional registration is 5 years from the date on which a person is first registered with the Council

The Council, on a case by case basis, may extend the validity of a provisional registration.

A person who does not meet the requirements for full registration before his/her provisional registration period has expired may apply to the Council for an extension of time to register

Requirements

New Registration

Applicants need to submit:

A Completed application form attached with certified copies of the following:

Birth certificate indicating place and date of birth

One passport photo (original)

Evidence of all qualifications – teaching and/or other

Documentary evidence, as applicable, of all names and/or name changes such as marriage or divorce certificates, citizenship, residency and work permit documents

National Identity Card

Applicants currently employed in Seychelles need a character certificate from Heads of institutions.

New applicants from overseas intending to teach in Seychelles should submit a police clearance certificate.

A suitability checked or vetted certificate /evidence

Renewal of Registration

To maintain and renew your registration with the Teachers Council you will need to:

Demonstrate ongoing maintenance of professional development related to teaching standards – at least 15 hours per year of professional development.

Show evidence of having met the Teaching days requirement in Seychelles – one-year full time teaching is equivalent to 180 teaching days.

WHERE TO START?

 

Take count of your registration period and start collecting and keeping a record of your professional learning activities.

Create a ‘Teacher Registration’ file and place your activity log sheet at the front as a content page.

Start filing out your log sheet (best to be done gradually during your period of registration).

Save your evidence in the file (attendance register, notes, certificates, samples of students work and other relevant evidence)
